Canyon (16-2) at Clovis (9-2)
When: 6:30 p.m. today at Rock Staubus Gym.
Radio: KCLV-FM 99.1.
Last time out: Clovis defeated Mayfield 63-41 on Saturday at The Rock. Canyon entered a tournament last week at Mansfield, Texas, ranked No. 1 in Texas Class 4A and dropped two of three games, capped by a 56-45 loss to Pflugerville on Tuesday.
Last meeting: January 2009 at Canyon. The Lady Wildcats played fairly competitively in a 55-34 loss except for the second quarter, when they were outscored 14-1 to fall behind by 17 points.
Of note: This is the sixth consecutive year the teams have played. Clovis’ 30-0 Class 5A state champion team in 2005 posted a 48-38 win at Canyon, then beat the Lady Eagles 49-45 here the following season. Canyon has won the last three meetings. … Coach Joe Lombard, in his 32nd season, has won more than 1,000 games and has led Canyon to 14 state titles, mostly in Class 3A. The Lady Eagles moved up to Class 4A a couple of years ago. “They’ve got a lot of tradition,” Lady Wildcats coach Jeff Reed said. “They’ll do the same stuff they always have.” … Leaders for the Lady Eagles include junior all-state guard Nicole Hampton and senior post Jordan Vessels. One of their top players, senior guard Taryn Borchardt, has missed several games with a broken hand. … The Lady Cats take on Monument Valley at 4:30 p.m. Friday and Pinnacle at 6 p.m. Saturday in the New Mexico/Arizona Challenge at The Rock.
Quotable: “This is a good test for us to compare ourselves to our last state championship team.” — Reed.
