New Mexico Military (17-9) at Portales (12-12), 7 p.m. today in a District 4-3A tournament semifinal.
Radio: KSEL-FM 105.9.
Last outing: The Rams finished their regular season with a 46-39 win at home on Friday over Dexter. The Colts advanced in the tournament on Tuesday, beating Ruidoso 61-50 at Roswell.
Season series: The teams split, NMMI winning 53-50 at Roswell on Jan. 19 and Portales returning the favor with a 47-42 win at home on Feb. 6.
Notes: The Rams earned the No. 2 seed and forced the Colts to settle for No. 3 in the tournament by virtue of their two-point edge head-to-head. … NMMI leaders are 6-foot-5 senior P Giles Zollar and 5-10 senior G Nathan Moore. “They’re real scary,” Rams coach Mark Gallegos said of the Colts. “They’ve got a real good inside-outside game, and they pose some matchup problems for us, especially since we’re so small. … Gallegos said the Rams led 23-9 at NMMI, “and then we got in foul trouble.” … Portales hopes to use its quickness to pressure the Colts and force more of an up-tempo style. He noted that NMMI is not a deep team, particularly inside. … The winner plays at top-seeded Lovington at 7 p.m. Saturday in the finals. “We’ve got to just focus on NMMI,” Gallegos said. “This is a big game for seeding purposes (in the state tournament). We still have an outside chance for a top-eight seed (and a first-round home game).”
