FLOYD — For the first time in three head-to-head meetings this season, someone got some offense going between Melrose and Floyd.
It was the visiting Buffaloes who did it, parlaying 26 points from senior Sammy Lawrence an 14 from senior Kendall Mudgett into a 58-40 victory over Floyd in a District 3-1A tournament boys semifinal Thursday night.
The Buffaloes (15-8), seeded third in the five-team tourney, advance to Saturday’s 6 p.m. championship game at Fort Sumner. Both teams are assured of playing next week in the regional round of state competition.
Melrose trailed 8-7 at the quarter, but went on a 19-9 run in the second stanza and never relinquished control.
The closest the second-seeded Broncos (20-6) were able to come in the second half was seven points.
“Our kids came out and played hard, and so did theirs,” Melrose coach Dickie Roybal said. “It just went our way tonight.”
The teams split during the season, with both winning at home — Melrose by a 46-30 count, and Floyd by a 38-28 margin.
Senior Chet Chenault led Floyd with 13 points and junior J’Kobie Lee added 11.
