• Senior Hayden Huber had four 3-pointers and finished with a career-best 23 points Saturday night as second-seeded Melrose won at top-seeded Fort Sumner 54-49 in the District 3-1A tournament finals.
The Buffaloes (16-8) will host Evangel Christian in a first-round state tournament game next weekend, while the Foxes (17-10) will travel to Santa Fe Waldorf, which beat Evangel Christian 36-31 to take its district tourney title.
Fort Sumner pulled to 35-30 late in the third quarter, but the Buffs scored the final five points. Melrose held off the Foxes, who got within 53-49 in the final minute but shot just 3-for-8 from the foul line in the final 43 seconds and finished the game 9-of-20.
Melrose, which got 13 points from senior Clint Barnard, had nine 3-pointers in the game to none for Fort Sumner. Senior Rawley Stallard led the Foxes with 14 points.
Girls
• Mandy Rush scored 23 points and Molly Rush added 13 as top-seeded Grady defeated Logan 69-52 for the District 4-1A title at Grady.
The Lady Bronchos (17-9) went 32-of-45 from the free throw line for the game, led by Mandy Rush with 13-of-17.
The Lady Longhorns, seeded second in the tournament, were led by 12 points from Whitney Cordova and 11 each from Nicole Collins and Jessica Aguilera.
