The Portales Rams and Lady Rams swept duals on Tuesday against Artesia in matches played at the PHS courts and at Eastern New Mexico University.
Portales won the boys dual 6-3 and edged Artesia 5-4 in girls competition.
The Rams took five of their six singles matches. Winners were Kacy Vigil 6-4, 6-7, 6-0 at No. 2; Nathan Walker 3-6, 7-6, (10-4) at No. 3; Brandon Carter 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4; Raymike Montoya 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5, and Mychael Sturm 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6.
Meantime, Ryan Wood dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 1. In doubles, Jesse Hooper and Carter won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3, while Wood and Vigil lost 7-6, 6-3 at No. 1 and Montoya and Walker lost 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 at No. 2.
The Lady Rams went 4-2 in singles, and got a 6-3, 7-5 win from Shelby Lucero and Megan Combs at No. 1 doubles.
Lucero won her match at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1, while Makynsi Whited prevailed 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2, Combs posted a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 4 and Sabrina Montoya won at No. 6 when her opponent defaulted due to injury after losing the first set to Montoya 6-4.
Kim Spotswood dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 3 singles, and Stefania Gutierrez lost her match at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles, Whited and Spotswood were beaten 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 and Montoya and Walker lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
Portales will host an eight-team invitational on Friday and Saturday, with teams paired for duals in quarterfinal play. Other schools participating in the event are Lovington, Ruidoso, Hobbs, Artesia, Hope Christian, Santa Fe High and Raton.
