McKynsi Whited returns a shot from the baseline in her doubles match with Sabrina Montoya against Ruidoso on Saturday in the Bill Wahlman Invitational at the ENMU courts.

The Portales Lady Rams swept everything except No. 3 doubles — and they lost that in a super-tiebreaker — in rolling past District 4-3A rival Ruidoso 8-1 Saturday in the Bill Wahlman Inviational, played at the PHS and ENMU tennis courts.

Portales had little trouble with the Lady Warriors in singles, except at No. 5 where Sabrina Montoya had to go to a super-tiebreaker to get past Carolina Espinoza. Otherwise, the Lady Rams lost only 11 games in singles.

“We played very well,” Lady Rams coach Sara Meeks said. “I’m very proud of my girls.”

Hobbs took the girls side of the tournament, blanking Artesia 9-0 in the championship match. Lovington defeated Hope Christian 6-3 for third place.

Portales’ boys were beaten 6-3 on Saturday by Hobbs in the fifth-=place match.

The Rams posted singles wins at No. 2 from brandon Carter — 6-3, 6-2 over Josh Ponce — and at No. 6, with Royce Main claiming a 6-4, 6-1 decision over the Eagles’ Jeremy Polacek.

In doubles, Portales’ Jesse Hooper and Mychael Strum were victorious over Hobbs’ Bart Haverkorn and Daniel Gonzalez 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2.

“Our lower guys are pretty competitive,” Rams coach Brian Kirchner said. “Really, all of our guys are pretty even. We’re pretty deep, but it’s always nice to have players with a litle more experience.”

Santa Fe High and Lovington met for the boys championship late Saturday night. Hope Christian beat Ruidoso 5-3 in the third-place match.

Portales squads are slated to begin District 4-3A competition with 3 p.m. home matches this week against Ruidoso on Tuesday and New Mexico Military Institute on Thursday.
