Jose Luis of Floyd in the stretch of the 400 meters at the District 3-1A track meet April 30 in Fort Sumner. In his first year to compete in track, Luis is qualified in the 100 and 200 at the state meet.

Junior Tori Tucker could put a bunch of points on the board for Floyd in state Class 1A track competition, scheduled Wednesday and Thursday at the University of New Mexico’s track facility in Albuquerque.

Tucker is entered in four field events and also runs the second leg on the Lady Broncos’ 400-meter relay team.

“Tori’s favored to win the javelin,” Floyd girls coach Adam Terry said. “She could be one of the top three in shot put, and she has a chance to do well in discus and (probably) long jump.”

The Lady Broncos have two other state entries — eighth-grader Taryn Lee in the 300 hurdles and senior Veronica Mendoza in the 3,200. The boys are sending freshman Jose Mendoza in the 1,600 and 3,200 and senior Jose Luis in the 100 and 200.

Elida senior Shanna Anthony may challenge in shot put, coach Darrell Chenault said.

“Shanna’s been there; this will be her fourth time to state,” he said. “She’s throwing really well this week, and she won district (at Fort Sumner on Saturday).

“She’s got that look about her. She’s focused and ready to go.”

The Lady Tigers also have freshman Shealton Veo-Chenault in both hurdles and eighth-grader Hunter Haley in high jump, the 400 and the 300 hurdles. Both are ranked in the top eighth in their events, Chenault said.

Dora will have freshman Kendra Hair in discus and junior Kelli Merrick in high jump for the girls, while the boys qualified junior Jacob Arzola in the 800 and 1,600 and their 1,600 and medley relays. Arzola is also running on both relays.

Dora coach Pablo Pena is looking to build on this year’s experience.

“We don’t have any seniors going,” he said. “We’re excited about what we have returning. I think our relay teams have a chance if they run well.”
