Area track teams are competing today in the 1A-2A state track and field competition in Albuquerque.

Logan, San Jon, Tucumcari and House track team members had four days to rest for state competition following Friday’s District 1A-2A meet in Tucumcari.

Class 2A

“Carla Chavez has won district champion in women’s discus for the third year in a row,” said Bryan Dunlap, field event coach.

Chavez’s strong performance along with first- (400 meter) and second-place (800 meter) relay teams earned the Lady Rattlers a district championship.

The Rattlers finished second behind Texico with strong performances by their first-place finishes in the 400 and 800 meter relays and first-place finishes by Alex Hutchins in discus and George Montano in long jump.

The Lady Logan Longhorns clinched a district championship over Grady by 19 points.

Class 1A girls

The Lady Longhorns won first place in the 400- and 800-meter relay, long jump (Marissa Miller), 300-meter hurdles (Whitney Cordova), shot put and discus (Cassandra Evans).

San Jon’s Lady Coyotes placed fifth with first-place javelin (Tracy Foote), third place 100- and 300-meter hurdles (Katie Kent) and 800-meter run (Ashley Bobbit) and fourth-place finishes 400-meter dash (Jennifer Osborn) and 100-meter dash (Katie Kent)

House’s Cowgirls placed sixth with fourth-place discus (Aleigh Weese), fifth-place 1600 meter run (Cheyenne Price) and sixth-place 200-meter dash (Aleigh Weese).

Class 1A boys

The Logan Longhorns placed second followed by San Jon Coyotes and House Cowboys.

The Longhorns had first-place finishes in the 400-meter, 800-meter 1600-meter relays.

The Coyotes had first-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (Jacob Benally), 3200-meter run (Bobby Benally) and the 1600-medley relay.

The Cowboys had a first-place finish in pole vault (Bobby Lee) and second-place 800 meter run and third place in the 200- and 400-meter dash (Bobby Lee).

The teams will compete today and Thursday at the state 1A-2A track and field competition at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
