ALBUQUERQUE — Junior Shelby Lucero absorbed a 6-1, 6-0 loss at the hands of freshman Paloma Gomez of St. Michael’s on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of state Class 1A/3A individual tennis singles competition.

Lucero, seeded fourth, had drawn a first-round bye while Paloma advanced with a first-round win on Wednesday over Jenna Coyle of Mesilla Valley.

Both PHS squads are in Albuquerque today for the start of state team tennis competition, and both face Sandia Prep in quarterfinal matches. The girls match begins at 10:30 a.m. while the boys are scheduled to play at 1:30 p.m.
