Girls

Portales 3, Robertson 0

Records: Portales 3-2, Robertson 0-1.

Difference: The Lady Rams scored goals on breakaways from sophomores Jenna Sievers and Kaitlin Garrett two minutes apart midway through the first half.

Difference-makers: Portales, sophomore Tayler Hammack collected four saves for her second shutout of the season.

Right place, right time: Freshman Brynn Roberts was credited with a goal after a corner kick bounced off a Robertson player with four seconds to go in the first half, which gave Portales a 3-0 lead.

Helpers: Portales sophomore Shalin Bond and senior Becca Porter assisted on breakaway goals.

Go figure: Sievers has scored in all five of Portales’ games this season.

Coach’s comment: “We had some good attacks and our midfielders were able to win some balls in the air. Jenna helps us sometimes during the game because the defense keys on her more so that makes the team step up and be more involved in the game.” — Portales coach Traci Sievers said.

Boys

Portales 4, Robertson 3 (2OT)

Records: Portales 1-1-1, Robertson 0-1.

Difference: Freshman Brandon Gomez netted the game-winning goal in second overtime off a corner kick from senior Seth Christensen.

Difference-makers: Portales, senior Gabriel Ayala scored two goals and senior Seth Christensen had a goal and two assists. Robertson, senior Henry Robertson had two assists.

In goal: Portales goalkeeper senior Juan Tinahero finished with seven saves.

By the numbers: This was Ayala’s second two-goal game this season.

Coach’s comment: “We’re still not playing well because we’ll go on a run and then we’ll have some errors and they exploit those errors to get back in the game. It’s still early in the season, but we have to make sure to not make mistakes. I think we came together in this game because I told them if they wanted to win they had to want it. They came together and worked things out.” — said Portales coach Brian Kirchner.
