• Last meeting: 2005, CCS rolled to a 56-20 win over the Panthers in the season opener.
• Last week: The Panthers did not play. CCS crushed Dora 47-0 in a game ended on the 45-point lead rule in the first minute of the third quarter.
• Of note: CCS, playing in 6-man for the first time since 2005 after four years in 8-man, is tied with two-time defending 6-man state champion Lake Arthur for the No. 1 ranking. “We’ve got our hands full,” CCS coach Jason Swann said. “They’re going to give us everything we want and more.” … The Eagles’ held Dora to three first downs and 47 total yards, Swann said. “We know our offense is loaded, but in 6-man when you can shut somebody out you’re really playing defense,” he said. … Swann said the teams may hold back a little of the playbook with the possibility they’ll see each other in postseason. “I’d be shocked if we don’t see them again,” he said.
Texico (1-0) at Springlake-Earth (1-0)

• Last meeting: 2009, Texico edged Springlake-Earth 20-14 at Texico. Both teams are “Wolverines.”
• Last week: Texico shut out Dexter 14-0. Springlake-Earth routed Panhandle 37-14.
• Of note: Texico coach Ryan Autrey said Springlake-Earth, ranked eighth in Texas Class 1A, will be one of his team’s toughest challenges. “I told people early on they’re just the opposite of what we are,” he said. “They have a lot of starters back. We’ve got quite a few guys who are learning how to play at the varsity level.” … Autrey was pleased with his team’s effort against Dexter. “We had some obvious mistakes we need to correct, but I thought they did a great job,” he said. “The thing that impressed me is how mentally tough these kids were.”
Fort Sumner (1-0) at Carrizozo (0-1)

• Last meeting: 2009, Fort Sumner struggled, but shut out the Grizzlies 10-0.
• Last week: Fort Sumner turned back New Mexico Military 32-17. Carrizozo lost to the Roswell High junior varsity 29-26.
• Of note: Fort Sumner beat the Grizzlies in the Class 1A state finals in 2006, one of the Foxes’ four consecutive titles. … Carrizozo is led by junior quarterback Marshall Ventura and senior running back Joel Ferguson. Foxes coach Matt Moyer said Ventura runs well “and makes the offense go.” … Moyer said he thought the Grizzlies, playing a lot of players both ways, wore down in the heat at Roswell. … The key is to be able to pass, Moyer said. “We kind of expect them to stack the box,” he said. “We need to improve (from last week) on our throwing game.”
Animas (1-0) at Melrose (1-0)

• Last meeting: 2009, the two-time 8-man state champion Buffaloes routed Animas 64-22 in a game played at Carrizozo.
• Last week: Animas edged Tatum 16-14. Melrose got past Logan 50-36.
• Of note: The Panthers’ leader is senior quarterback Gabe Hernandez. “They’ve got decent size and good speed,” Melrose coach Dickie Roybal said. “They don’t have a lot of kids, but we have no depth at all (due to injuries). The kids we put in there have to do a good job of gap control.” Melrose will be without junior tailback-defensive end Lance Widner (leg) and junior tight end Daniel Lyons (dislocated elbow).
Olton (0-1) at Farwell (1-0)

n Last meeting: 2009, the Mustangs posted a 33-6 win over the Steers.
n Last week: Farwell routed Morton 51-6. Olton lost at Tulia 8-0.
n Of note: The Steers’ Lincoln Devault went 7-for-7 on PATs last week. … Senior quarterback Pecos Martin and junior running back Billy Ross lead the Mustangs. … First-year Farwell coach Mike Prokop said Olton dominated Morton in a preseason scrimmage. “The kids have to keep (last week’s win) in perspective,” he said. “Each week is a new week. This will be a good test for us.” … Prokop said he expects Olton to be able to throw the ball effectively with Martin.
Bovina (1-0) at Boys Ranch (1-0)

• Last meeting: 2009, the Mustangs steamrolled the Roughriders 63-32 in what was then a district game. They are playing at Boys Ranch for a second consecutive year.
• Last week: Bovina thumped Hale Center 54-6. Boys Ranch scored a 14-12 win over Wheeler.
• Of note: Bovina coach Hector Guevara said the Roughriders probably at least match his team in size and speed. “We’re not going to be able to do what we did last week,” he said. “Hopefully, we can sustain some drives and milk the clock a little bit.” … Boys Ranch has a Division I prospect in 6-foot-8, 370-pound tackle-nose guard Laquan McGowan, who has verbally committed to Baylor for next season.

Last week: Reserve beat Menaul 20-14, while Floyd lost to Springer 46-21.
Notes: The Broncos are looking to break a seven-game losing streak. … Menaul lead Reserve 14-12 going into the fourth quarter before the Mountaineers scored late to take the win.
