After blowing out Goddard in their season opener more than a week ago, the Portales Lady Rams figure to get tested for the first time in the three-day Levelland, Texas, tournament that starts today.

Portales (1-0) faces Hereford in the opening round at 11:30 a.m.

Portales coach Clay Stout said his team hasn’t had much practice since the Goddard game because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

“We’re going to have to use the games like practice,” Stout said. “Most of those Texas schools have been playing basketball for a long time, and some since August.”

Stout said playing against Texas teams will help the Portales Lady Rams learn where they need to improve.

“I’ve seen Hereford play before,” Stout said. “They have some really quick guards and they like to run a full court 1-1 or 1-2 press, then go over to a man-to-man pressure. That is a good thing because we’ll get to see a lot of stuff and learn to attack it in the right manner.”

Portales beat Goddard 49-13 Nov. 23 at PHS.
