TEXICO — Tanner Sorrells and Rylan Colbert scored 16 points each Thursday to lead the Logan Longhorns to a 64-59 victory over Texico in the final boys quarterfinal game in the Citizens Bank Border Shootout basketball tournament.
Logan (1-0) broke away from a 48-48 tie by outscoring the Wolverines 16-11 in the final period. Sorrells had two of the Longhorns’ four 3-point baskets.
The Wolverines (1-1) were led by 16 points from senior Lucas Walthers.
Logan will meet Floyd, a 56-43 winner Thursday over Bovina, in a 6 p.m. semifinal game today.
In the other boys semifinal, Farwell (3-0) faces the Clovis High junior varsity (1-0) at 9 a.m. today. The Farwell girls (4-3), who beat Dexter 49-34 on Thursday, also play an early semifinal game against Melrose (1-0), scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
The Farwell games were moved up to allow their players and fans to attend the Steers’ Class 1A Division II quarterfinal football playoff game tonight against Springlake-Earth at Lubbock.
Farwell’s boys dispatched Dexter 75-41 on Thursday. Also, the Clovis JV posted a 71-35 win over Melrose.
In other girls’ first-round games, it was Melrose 53, the Clovis JV 49 in overtime; Texico 53, Logan 15, and Floyd 56, Bovina 30.
Boys
Farwell 75, Dexter 41 — The Steers, still missing a number of players with football, got 19 points each from Josh Olivas and Octavio Chavez. Farwell led 24-4 at the end of the first quarter against the Demons, who were playing their season opener.
Steven Marquez scored 11 points for Dexter.
Clovis JV 71, Melrose 35 — The Wildcats opened a 19-7 lead at the quarter and coasted behind 13 points each from Diego Romero and Martin Lopez. Eleven players reached the scoring column for the Cats.
Floyd 56, Bovina 43 — The Broncos (2-1) outscored Bovina 31-15 in the middle two quarters to turn a two-point lead into a comfortable margin.
Justin Rogers had two 3-pointers and scored 21 points for Floyd, while J’Kobie Lee and Larkin Lindsey added 13 apiece.
Bovina (0-2), which was eliminated from the football playoffs last Friday by Farwell, got 12 points from Gael Vela.
Girls
Melrose 53, Clovis JV 49, OT — The Lady Buffaloes (1-0) outscored the Lady Wildcats 9-5 in the extra session to take the victory.
Cara Barnard led Melrose with 18 points while her sister, Caley Barnard, added 12. Clovis got 16 points from Brandi Gomez.
Farwell 39, Dexter 34 — The Lady Blue opened a 14-6 lead at the quarter against the Lady Demons.
Farwell (4-3) got 10 points from Abby Johnson, while while six others pitched in at least five points.
For Dexter (0-3), Jenna Garcia was the lone double-figure scorer with 11 points.
Texico 53, Logan 15 — Junior Jordyn Cooper drained four 3-pointers and finished with 17 points in Texico’s easy opening-round victory.
Nine other players contribued to Texico’s win, with no one else scoring more than six points. Whitney Cordova had six points and Ashley Muncy added five for the Lady Longhorns (0-1).
Floyd 56, Bovina 30 — Senior Tori Tucker scored 21 points and Floyd cruised after building a 24-8 lead after one quarter.
Tabitha Ornelas added 12 points for the Lady Broncos (2-1). Bovina (0-5) was paced by nine points from Lynda Rodriguea and six from Liz Chavez.
