ROSWELL — Portales’ pressure defense overwhelmed New Mexico Military from the start and keyed the Rams to a 74-20 rout of the struggling Colts on Friday night.

While NMMI had a tough time putting points on the board, the Rams (2-1) got scoring contributions from 12 players in the easy win.

“NMMI is down this season,” Portales coach Mark Gallegos said. “I thought we came out and played with some intensity. We pressured them, and they had a hard time breaking our press. It was nice because everybody got plenty of time to play.”

Portales (2-1) had two players in double figures, with senior guard Andrew Villanueva and senior post Garrett Hancock scoring 10 points apiece. The leading scorer for the Colts (1-4) was junior forward Stephen Powers with five points.

Gallegos said the Rams did well on little things that were encouraging to him, even against an outmanned opponent.

“I thought we had to work on some little things,” Gallegos said. “It was balanced scoring and a good team win, but we’re going to have to step up and play two tough games next week.”

The Rams return home next week for games against Friona on Tuesday and Muleshoe on Friday.

“We need two more wins before we go into the break and then we have the Stu Clark tournament (at Las Vegas, N.M),” Gallegos said. “We need those two wins to build on. Friona shoots the ball really well and they have a lot of size. They’re a really physical team and we’re going to have to handle their inside game and defend their 3-point shots on the outside.”
