LAS CRUCES — Clovis’ tour through southern New Mexico took a hit Friday night, as host Onate took a 65-59 win over the visiting Wildcats.
Tim Jacobs had a game-high 21 points to lead three Knights in double figures and hand Clovis (6-1) its first defeat of the season.
Brandon Rosales added 14 and Terrell Derond 12 for Onate (7-1), which never trailed following an 11-5 second quarter.
“They got the lead and really just spread it out and held it,” Clovis coach J.D. Isler said. “They spread it out and used their quickness to penetrate. We switched to a zone, but they would stand out there and hold it. It cut down on our opportunities to score, because they ran so much time on the clock.
“Second half, we gave up way too many transition points. We’d crash the boards, and our safeties wouldn’t get back.”
Lathan Lieb scored 18 points to lead the Wildcats, while D.J. Blackmon added 13 and John Dawson 10.
Isler said the Wildcats played well, particularly against a raucous crowd.
Clovis has less than 18 hours to recover, with a 2:30 p.m. game today at Alamogordo.
“We scheduled it for a purpose, just like we scheduled two trips to Albuquerque,” Isler said. “You’ve got to use all of these games to get kids to understand how to play, turn around and play again. We’re hoping all of this is going to help us.”
