PORTALES — Devanne Sours scored 15 points and Michelle Presher added 15 as Tatum held off Melrose 45-44 Saturday in the EPAC tournament girls third-place game.

The Lady Coyoes (11-1) opened a 25-220 halftime lead by outscoring Melrose 17-11 in the second quarter, and led by nine after three periods. The Lady Buffs (11-4) put together a furious run, led by sophomore Cara Barnard with two 3-pointers and 12 of her game-high 20 points in the final period.

Eighth-grader Caley Barnard added 13 points for Melrose.

Consolation bracket

Elida 46, Clayton 43 — The Lady Tigers (9-3) rode 16 points from Reavis Best and 13 from Margarita Ortiz to victory over the Lady Jackets.

Clayton (8-4) trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter and held Elida to two points, but couldn’t generate enough offense to pull it out.

The Lady Jackets were led by two 3-pointers and 16 points from Chelsea Kear and 10 points, including 6-of-6 free throws, from Norma Vital.

Grady 57, Logan 41 — The Lady Bronchos outscored Logan 34-19 over the middle two quarters to erase a one-point deficit.

Senior Mandy Rush went 11-of-11 from the free throw line and added a pair of 3-pointers en route to 27 points for Grady (9-6), which also got 10 points from Mackenzee Starbuck. Whitney Cordova had 15 points for the Lady Longhorns 96-4), and Nicole Collins added 10.

 

Boys

Bryan Foust and Jacob Benally scored 16 points each and San Jon claimed third place with a 57-53 victory over Dora.

The Coyotes (9-5), who hadn’t reached the EPAC final four in at least 12 years, also got 12 points from Chase Thompson.

Colton Gruis had four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 26 points for Dora (7-7). Dylan Privett chipped in 10 points.

Consolation bracket

Logan 59, Floyd 52, OT — Rylan Calbert scored 23 points and Logan dominated the extra session 10-3 to beat Floyd.

Andrew Aguilara added 10 points for the Longhorns (7-3). For the Broncos (8-6), Justin Rogers had four 3-pointers and 23 points and Leon Mendoza added 11.

Clayton 75, Tatum 46 — Jorge Gonzales scored 24 points and James Hidalgo added 15 — all on 3-pointers — as the Yellowjackets (7-3) opened a 23-7 lead at the quarter and cruised.

J.J. Simpson scored 14 points and Justin Thomas added 11 for Clayton. Joseph Belsam was the high scorer for the Coyotes (4-8) with 12 points.
