ALBUQUERQUE — D.J. Blackmon scored 20 points, and the Clovis Wildcats fought off foul trouble to win their ninth straight, 77-67, Friday night at Highland.
Lathan Lieb added 18 points and John Dawson 15, including six on three straight steals and dunks, as Clovis (15-1) took control with a 27-17 domination of the second quarter and held off the Hornets late.
“We played well,” Clovis coach J.D. Isler said. “We were really in a good rhythm in the first half. It was a really good crowd and a tough environment.”
It was the first action for Clovis since gaining the top spot in the New Mexico High School Coaches Association Class 5A poll on Wednesday.
Isler said the Wildcats’ reserves stepped up on a night when they were needed, with Dawson, Craig Cook and Lincoln Nora each saddled with foul trouble. Nora scored nine points and Cook eight in limited minutes.
Junior Mike Saavedra led the Hornets (10-6), ranked eighth in 5A, with 18 points, including 10-of-10 free throws. Senior Peter Zannes had three 3-pointers and 10 points.
The Wildcats are in action again tonight against Cleveland High School at Rio Rancho.
“I think our energy level will be good tomorrow,” Isler said. “Obviously, those guys who got in foul trouble didn’t play a lot of minutes.”
