Lathan Lieb scored 23 of his game-high 30 points in the second half, helping the Clovis Wildcats hold off the Hobbs Eagles 80-71 Saturday night at Ralph Tasker Arena.
Sophomores John Dawson and D.J. Blackmon each added 18 for Clovis (19-2, 1-0 District 4-5A), winners of four straight and 13 of their last 14.
“We just really stayed within ourselves,” Clovis coach J.D. Isler said. “We didn’t try to do things we weren’t used to doing. I thought we rebounded really well.”
Against the sub-.500 Eagles — a rarity for Hobbs (10-14, 1-1) — the Wildcats had their share of trouble. Isler said Lieb, Dawson and post Lincoln Nora all had four fouls in the fourth quarter, and Blackmon was limited due to cramping.
“I think it speaks well of our kids. They don’t seem to get really high or really low emotionally.”
Eric Menchaca hit seven 3-pointers en route to 26 points for Hobbs. Shay Reimers added 15 and Dane Pannell had 14 for the Eagles.
“They got in the 1-on-1 (bonus) early in the second half and stayed close with the free throws,” Isler said. “But I felt like we had four good quarters.”
The Wildcats play twice at home this week, continuing district play Tuesday against Carlsbad and facing Roswell on Friday.
