RUIDOSO — The Portales Lady Rams ended a rough week on the road with a win Saturday night, and they now control their destiny in three-team District 4-3A.
Senior Gabby Garcia and junior Macy Mitchell scored 13 points each and sophomore Jenna Sievers added 10 as Portales downed Ruidoso 46-34.
The Lady Rams (13-9, 1-1 district) host Lovington (2-1 in district) on Tuesday and Ruidoso (15-8, 1-2) on Friday. If they win both, they’ll be the regular-season district champions.
Portales, which lost at Lovington on Tuesday and at Texico on Thursday, trailed 14-13 at the half, but rolled off a 15-7 run in the third quarter to take control as Garcia scored seven points and Sievers delivered a 3-pointer.
“Early we were getting good shots in our offense,” Lady Rams coach Clay Stout said. “Sure enough, things started clicking in the second half.
“They’re a really athletic team, and it took us a while to adjust to that.”
Senior Abriana Herrera scored 11 points for the Lady Warriors.
Portales boys 60, Ruidoso 39 — The Rams (15-7, 2-0) took control with a 20-14 third quarter, and got 20 points from Miguel Vasquez.
“We did a better job in the press in the third quarter,” Portales coach Mark Gallegos said., “and we attacked their zone better.”
Jesse Blue added 16 for Portales while Kiesto Ontiveros and Dustin Caroland combined for 11 points off the bench after guard Andrew Villanueva was benched for a technical foul.
Ruidoso (10-12, 0-3) got nine points from Ishmael Cook.
The Rams host Lovington on Tuesday and Ruidoso on Friday. A win Tuesday would clinch the regular season district championship. Portales defeated Lovington 39-38 last week.
