BERNALILLO — Elida showed Tuesday why it is clearly the No. 1 seed in the state Class B girls basketball tournament.

The Lady Tigers scored more points in the second quarter (27) than they allowed for the entire game in cruising to a 68-24 quarterfinal victory over Corona.

Elida (24-3) advanced to an 11:30 a.m. semifinal on Thursday at Bernaillo against fourth-seeded Hondo, a 64-45 winner over Reserve.

The Lady Tigers already have a 23-point win this season over the Lady Eagles — at Hondo, no less.

“They’re not bad,” Lady Tigers coach Dan Howard, who watched part of the 8 a.m. Hondo-Reserve matchup. “They’re a lot better than the team we played today.”

Senior Reavis Best led four Lady Tigers in double figures with 15 points. Senior Margarita Ortiz, sophomore Shealton Veo-Chenault and eighth-grader Marily Varela each added 10 points.

“It’s hard to stay focused in a game like that,” Howard said. “But overall, I’d say we did OK.”

Sisters Taylor and Allysanne Huey accounted for all the points for the Lady Cardinals (9-12) — Taylor with 19 and Allysanne with five.
