No. 2 Clovis (26-2) vs. No. 3 Manzano (18-8)

What: Class 5A semifinal

Quarterfinals: Clovis beat Valley 79-46; Manzano beat Las Cruces High 46-43.

Overview: Manzano, which features a lineup that includes 6-10 senior Michael Holyfield and 6-6 junior Austin Roark and 6-4 senior Erik Bouma, is the biggest team Clovis has faced this season. The Monarchs, who beat out Eldorado for the District 5-2A title, likes to play a patient, half-court style. “They’re real deliberate and like to pound the ball inside,” Clovis coach J.D. Isler said. “We want to try and make them run for 32 minutes and play a style they don’t want to.” ... Manzano has beaten Eldorado three times this season (49-46, 64-56 and 84-81). Clovis beat Eldorado 88-80 at home. ... We’ve never faced a 6-10 player before. He’s not a tremendous player, but we have to make sure and we got at him and not be intimidated,” Isler said. ... Bouma game-winner against Las Cruces, a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer.

Class 1A

No. 4 Fort Sumner (19-9) vs. No. 1 Hagerman (29-0)

What: Class 1A semifinal

When: 4:45 p.m. Thursday

Where: Bernalillo H.S.

Quarterfinals: Fort Sumner beat Jal 73-47; Hagerman beat Menaul 80-59.

Overview: Hagerman owns wins over Class 3A Lovington and Class 2A Tucumcari and Tularosa — all state tournament teams. The Bobcats and Class 1A No. 2 seed Cliff are the only unbeaten teams in the state.

Girls

Class 2A

No. 13 Dulce (16-12) vs. No. 1 Texico (25-2)

What: Class 2A semifinal

When: 9:45 a.m. Thursday

Where: Santa Ana Star Center, Rio Rancho

Quarterfinals: Dulce beat Estancia 64-51; Texico beat Cuba 63-30.

Overview: The Hawks won District 7-2A, beating Cuba twice in three meetings. Christina Yepa scored 28 points in Dulce’s quarterfinal win. “If we allow them to play their type of basketball, we’ll have our hands full,” Texico coach Keith Durham said. “They like to play a little helter-skelter and get up and down the court.”

Class 1A

No. 1 Fort Sumner (25-3) vs. No. 5 Cliff (24-5)

What: Class 1A semifinal

When: 6:45 a.m. Thursday

Where: Bernalillo H.S.

Quarterfinals: Fort Sumner beat Jal 60-39; Cliff beat Melrose 51-44.

Overview: Cliff features 6-1 junior Jenna Jennings and a couple of other big post players. Senior point guard Heather Henderson is a good floor leader and can hit 3-pointers. Fort Sumner counters with little size but lots of speed. “We’re going to try and push the issue as much as we can offensively and defensively,” Fort Sumner coach Matt Moyer said. “A lot of big girls don’t like to run up and down the court, so we’re hoping we can tire them out.” Moyer pointed out Fort Sumner has faced big teams and dominate post players this season, including 6-1 Shaylee Anderson of Texico and 6-2 Kelli Merrick of Dora.

Class B

No. 2 Grady (19-10) vs. No. 6 Mosquero ( 14-12)

What: Class B semifinal

When: 8 a.m. Thursday

Where: Bernalillo H.S.

Quarterfinals: Grady beat Walatowa Charter 76-45; Mosquero beat Carrizozo 51-41.

Overview: Grady beat district-rival Mosquero all three times they met this season. Grady coach Alicia Rush said her team needs to keep sophomore shooter Lynda Laumbach and senior post Erin Hayoz in check. “If we can keep out of foul trouble, that will allows us to press all night,” Rush said. “If we can do that, we can get into their bench, which is young. ... “The biggest thins is we need to play with confidence.”
