Three-time defending 8-man champion Melrose and two other area teams were ranked No. 1 in the first New Mexico High School Coaches Association football poll released Wednesday.

Defending Class 1A champion Fort Sumner and defending 6-man champ Clovis Christian also topped their respective classes.

Clovis was ranked fifth in Class 5A, with defending champ Mayfield garnering the top spot.
