ROSWELL — Portales High quickly put the defensive clamps on New Mexico Military Friday night.

Holding the Colts to 11 first-half points, the Rams (1-1) quickly built a double-figure margin and cruised to a 57-36 win to square their record for the season at 1-1.

Six Rams combined for nine 3-pointers in the contest. Sophomore guard Nathan Chavez had 12 points and senior guard David Rodriguez added 10, and those two as well as senior guard Ben Blue had two 3-pointers apiece.

Portales rolled to a 16-4 lead at the quarter, and by halftime it was 30-11.

“We put the press on early,” Rams coach Mark Gallegos said. “It’s the first time we were really able to use it.

“We did a good job defensively in the first half; overall, we played pretty good. It was a good game for us to work on a few things.”

All 14 Rams in uniform saw action, and 11 of them scored. Blue, Chavez and Rodriguez each had 3-pointers in the team’s first-quarter surge.

NMMI (2-3) was led by nine points from senior guard Justin Petross and eight from senior post Collin Weingardt.

The Rams stay on the road during a busy next week, traveling to Friona on Tuesday, Muleshoe on Friday and Santa Rosa on Saturday.
