Eleven different Rattlers were placed on the District 2, all-district first or second team for the 2003 season. Senior A.J. Molinas and junior Chris McCasland made the team at three different positions, which was more than any other players. “I was extremely pleased,” said Rattlers coach Dub Smith. “I was hoping that the ones on there would get the recognition and it really turned out great. All the coaches that voted were extremely impressed with our team and our players.” McCasland and Molinas were given the top district special teams award for punter and kicker respectively. “We stress to our young players that special teams is real important and that kicking and punting is a big part of the game,” Smith said. Tucumcari and Clayton tied for the most players on the teams with 21. Santa Rosa placed 15 total players on the teams. Tucumcari was the outright district winner with Santa Rosa finishing second and Clayton third. Santa Rosa was defeated in the playoff’s first round by Dexter. Tucumcari advanced to the state semifinal before losing to Hatch Valley 46-29.
