Rattlers fall to Clayton
Published: Monday, January 26th, 2004
The Tucumcari Rattlers could not overcome Clayton’s size advantage as they lost 75-43 last night. Clayton had three players over six feet tall. The Rattlers’ Justin Galvan battled the three giants under the basket, getting rebounds and cleanly blocking at least one shot. However, the Clayton big men wore down the Rattlers as the game progressed, however. Early on Clayton got off to a 5-0 run. While Tucumcari held their own for awhile, they were down 17-7 with two minutes remaining in the opening period. The Rattlers’ Matthew Braziel came on strong in the final minute of the quarter, hitting two buckets to pull Tucumcari to within four points as the first quarter ended. When the second quarter began, Clayton went on a 13-point blitz in the second period. Nemi Salvador finally scored for the Rattlers with two and half minutes left in the half. When the halftime buzzer sounded, Tucumcari trailed 37-21. Clayton began another surge and and wound up leading 55-27 midway through the third period. Tucumcari managed only six more points in the third. The final quarter was more of the same. Clayton continued to put points on the board while the Rattlers faltered. The Rattlers’ Ray Johnson hit a three with a little over two minutes remaining, but it was too little, too late. Rattlers’ Head Coach John Span said he won’t be trying anything new to prepare his team in the coming days. “We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing,” said Span. “They (Clayton) were hitting their shots and executing their transition game.” Scoring: Tcum 13 21 33 43 Clytn: 17 37 57 75 Individual scoring: Tucumcari: Matthew Braziel 2, Nemi Salvador 8, Joseph Aragon 8, Larry Roybal 2, Chris McCasland 5, Ray Johnson 9, Robert garcia 2, Justin Galvan, 5.
