Basketball to be taught in Tucumcari, San Jon

Former Tucumcari High School basketball coach, Lucky Carter, and the school’s current basketball coach, John Span, will be co-hosting youth basketball camps in San Jon and Tucumcari. The San Jon camp will run from June 14-17 for boys and girls in grades 3-12. The Tucumcari camp will run June 28-30. The San Jon camp will cost $60 per student while the Tucumcari camp will cost $50. Lucky Carter coached at Tucumcari for a decade. He took the high school team to the state tournament five of those years. He said he and Span will be working together at the camps, teaching fundamentally sound basketball. “We really push fundamentals,” said Carter. “We work on passing, the pick and roll and a variety of other skills. We also have a number of competitions during each day of camp including dribbling contests and scrimmages.” Coach Span said the attendees will learn a lot, but it will be up to them to continue honing the skills they are taught. “It’s one thing to work hard in front of coaches,” said Span. “It’s another thing to continue to work on skills when coaches are not around. These camps offer an opportunity to learn a lot of skills close to home. The athletes don’t have to spend a lot of money traveling to a distant camp.” Carter said former San Jon coach, Ed Lee, will also be giving instruction at the San Jon camp. “Ed Lee was the San Jon coach back in the early sixties,” said Carter. “ His teams won three state championships in 1961, 1962 and 1963.” Each athlete will receive a commemorative t-shirt and basketball at the close of each camp. “We hope the kids will take the basketballs home and really wear them out,” said Carter. Span said learning fundamentals is key to enjoying the game of basketball. “We show the students the game, so they will enjoy the game,” said Span. “When they learn the fundamentals, they tend to enjoy the game a lot more.” Those wishing to attend the San Jon camp should call Stacy Wooten at 576-2466. For the Tucumcari camp, call John Span at 461-6411 or 487-2501.
