Members of the United Way of Quay County are raising funds for the charitable organization. The annual fund drive is now in progress throughout Quay County until well into November. Pat Sparks, a United Way volunteer, said all the workers for United Way are volunteers. “About 99.25 percent of the money we raise goes to charitable causes in Quay County,” she said. Heather Duba, another volunteer, said the charitable causes are numerous. “United Way of Quay County gives money to causes like La Casa de la Hope, Helping Hands Hospice, domestic violence victims, arts and humanities and many others,” she said. John Ducharme, manager of road operations for Union Pacific Railroad, recently presented Quay County volunteers with a check for $2,500 on behalf of the railroad. Volunteers appeared pleased with their good start to a busy season of fund raising. Volunteer Amanda Hammer said volunteers are looking to raise more money than last year. “Last year we raised approximately $19,000. This year we hope to raise around $25,000,” she said. Donations can be mailed to: United Way of Quay County, P.O. Drawer U, Tucumcari, New Mexico 88401.
