Longhorns defeat San Jon 54-0

The Logan Longhorns dominated on both sides of the ball as they beat the San Jon Coyotes football team 54-0 Saturday at San Jon. In a game called at the half and marred by turnovers by both teams, the Longhorn defense allowed only two San Jon first downs and scored two safeties. San Jon Head Coach Eric Rivera fielded a team that had lost a total of 20 players over the course of the season, eleven of them starters. “Four players were lost due to injury and the others are gone for other reasons,” said Rivera. “Logan is a team that never quits, that’s what I’m trying to teach my players.” Coyote senior Abel Cullum once again gave unfailing effort in a losing cause and San Jon’s Mike Kandel was all over the field, gaining yardage on offense and intercepting a pass on defense. It was the Longhorns’ day, however, as a number of Longhorns got in on the scoring action. Jake Abercrombie caught a long pass on Logan’s first possession which set up a touchdown. Justin LeBlanc ran back a kickoff for a touchdown and John Maestas caught a 30-yard pass for a touchdown. Deaton Dowle ran for a 25-yard touchdown and Danny Karkaly ran for a 45-yard touchdown late in the game to set the mercy rule in motion. Logan’s second and third string offenses got in on the action as Michael Vest threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Saul Acosta. Logan Head Coach Billy Burns said it was all a matter of execution. “We did a good job blocking and executing our plays,” said Burns. “We’re disappointed with our season because we didn’t make the playoffs. If we had beaten either Melrose or Floyd we would be in the playoffs. Still, we are 5-2. That’s not bad.” Coach Rivera said he is looking forward to next season at the helm of the Coyotes. “I’m trying to get a junior high program started at San Jon,” said Rivera. “We’ve got some experienced players returning next season.” Abel Cullum is the lone San Jon senior. He will play his last game at Portales next week. Logan will lose seniors John Maestas, J.D. Estrada and Wes James after next week’s game at Clovis Christian.
