City to hold retreat

The Tucumcari City Commission has scheduled a planning retreat for Saturday, Oct. 23 to begin at 9 a.m. at the Tucumcari Convention Center. The retreat was the brainchild of Tucumcari Mayor pro tem Antonio Apodaca who expressed the opinion at the last meeting that there had not been enough time recently to sufficiently go over a number of different items confronting the Tucumcari City Commission. Apodaca pointed to such things as the recent city budget and to the current situation facing the city police. In fact, the official reason for the retreat as stated by the city, is to “review the 2004-2005 fiscal year budget, review the comprehensive plan and to discuss the goals and objectives for the 2004-2005 fiscal year.” Mayor Mary Mayfield said she looks forward to a very productive day at the convention center on Saturday. “I think this will provide us with a very good chance to really get things done.” The commission had originally hoped to have the retreat in November or December, but no other weekend between now and the end of the year was free to all of the different city commissioners. “So I guess, this weekend is the best,” said Mayfield. Commissioner Bettie Ditto will be meeting with a state tourism commission on Thursday and Friday but said it is not scheduled to run over into Saturday so it should not conflict with the retreat and could even give her something to bring to the retreat and discuss. Commissioner Christopher Maestes said he too would be bringing a number of items that he wanted discussed at the retreat. Scheduled to attend the retreat are the five members of the Commission, Maestes, Apodaca, Ditto, Mayfield and Commissioner Jim Witcher and Tucumcari City Manager Richard Primrose.
