The house girls traveled to the annual Vaughn Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament over the weekend and the small school walked away with second place. “I am proud of the girls,” said House Head Girls’ Coach Marc Foust about the contest. “They went into this tournament, played tough basketball and came out with a second place finish. I was very happy how the girls handled themselves especially in the championship when we were down in the closing minutes of the game.” The House Cowgirls played three games in the tournament. In the first round of the tourney, they played Corona and defeated them 48-26. In the second round, House took on Vaughn and House came out the winner defeating the larger school 55-7. In the championship round Saturday evening, House took on the state rated Mountainair and despite a strong run near the end of the game House ended up taking second in the tourney. 46-52. “They fought back and had a chance to win the game with a couple of seconds left in the game,” said Foust. In the Carona game only five players saw time on the court and all scored. Especially strong were Sara Lee with 16 points and Kimberly Lyons with 15 points. Shannan Lane accounted for nine. In the contest against Vaughn Once again Lee and Lyons were dominant with their scoring with Lee hitting for 21 and Lyons scored 12 points. Lane was responsible for nine points again. In the final game for the team in the tournament, the championship game, it was Lindsy Lee who was the dominant scorer for House scoring 22 while sister Sara hit for nine. as did Lyons. “Our free throw shooting is definitely something we need to work on,” said Foust. Mountainair is a good team, but if we shoot better from the line, I think that game ends differently.” The head coach said he was, for the most part, happy with the outcome of the Vaughn Tournament. “I think the Tournament will be a great learning experience as we continue this season,” said Foust, and it was great to come out of it with two wins. We still have room to improve, but I was happy with our performance this weekend.” Lindsy Lee and Sara Lee were named to the all tournament team. The season record for House stands at 2-3. Their next game is against Fort Sumner on Saturday, Dec. 14.
