Rattlers down San Jon 80-64
Published: Saturday, December 11th, 2004
The Tucumcari High School boys basketball team led all the way in an 80-64 victory over the San Jon Coyotes at San Jon Friday night. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Coyotes began to narrow the scoring gap. The Rattlers had five players in double figures. Trey Rusk led the Coyotes with 26 points Jarred Archuleta added 12 and Albert Hood added 10 to the San Jon point total. Rattler senior Chris McCasland made up for a lackluster performance at Fort Sumner by scoring a game-high 16 points at San Jon. Nemi Salvador had 14 points and Robert Munoz had 12 for the Rattlers. Matt Braziel hit some three-pointers to score 10 for the game. Jeremy Lopez stayed out of foul trouble and scored 10 points. Eric Holt finished with 7 points and racked up serious playing time getting steals and rebounds. The Rattlers went up 8-0 to begin the game, thus setting the tone for the evening. Trey Rusk was always a threat to hit a shot but the Rattlers had too much talent on the floor for the Coyotes. Rattler Coach John Span substituted often with no real loss of talent or quickness when the subs came in. In the second quarter, the Rattlers spread the scoring a round a bit as Holt, Lopez, Braziel and Salvador scored. Archuleta, Rusk and Richard Vasquez scored San Jon’s only second-quarter points as Tucumcari went up by 22 points at the half. The Rattlers moved ahead a little further in the third quarter, but Rusk hit a couple of threes early in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin. Archuleta and Hood were hitting as well even though Tucumcari never went deep into its own bench. The Coyotes outscored Tucucmari 22-12 in the fourth quarter.
