Some of the most important figures in Tucumcari met in the Territorial building of the Quay County Convention Center to discuss tourism and its effect on Tucumcari and what would be the best approach to take in regard to Tucumcari’s future. Hosting the meeting, which was the brainchild of Convention Center Director Ron Wilmot, was Tucumcari Mayor Mary Mayfield. In attendance were President of Mesalands Community College Phillip O. Barry, City Manager Richard Primrose, Mesalands Small Business Administrator David Buchen, new Greater Tucumcari Economic Development corporation Director Pete Kampfer, President of the Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce and vice president of First National Bank of New Mexico Will Cantrell and the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce Virginia Wright along with nine others. According to Mayfield, the purpose of the meeting was to gain a handle on the present situation in regards to tourism and make sure everyone was working together rather than at cross purposes to help Tucumcari improve in that field. “We want everyone on the same page,” said Mayfield. “Until we accomplish that, we can’t accomplish anything. After all tourism is economic development.” Four points were on the agenda of the meeting: 1. Branding Tucumcari, 2. Working together, 3. Main Street Program and 4. Future Meetings. In the first portion of the meeting the group decided to move away from any slogan to represent the city, such as “Tucumcari Tonite” or “Where Legends Begin” and instead step towards a symbol as the logo of the city. “A slogan can come and go,” said Barry “and they have, but with a visual logo it can stand the test of time.” Others agreed pointing to the consistency of the arches representing McDonalds for many decades, yet firms having slogan changes every few years. That was the reason that Barry suggested the logo for the town simply be Tucumcari Mountain, accompanied by the phrase “Tucumcari, New Mexico”. “It is identifiable with the town,” said Barry. The group agreed and appointed a committee to come up with a logo based on Tucumcari Mountain that would function well both in color and black-and-white, and would function in sizes as large as a billboard and as small as letterhead. On the committee were Kampfer, Buchen, Mesalands’ John Yearout and artist Doug Quarles. Besides the choosing of the logo, the meeting also saw the discussion of the New Mexico Main Street program and the general acceptance that it was a positive program but agreement that more time needs to be spent on it before any firm commitment can be made toward the program.
