Ag, home economics seminar today

The Quay County Extension Service is sponsoring the 37th Agriculture and Home Economics Seminar today at the Tucumcari Convention Center. The seminar is free and open to the public. Registration and refreshments begin at 8:30 a.m. Lunch is catered by Caprock Creek Ranch and provided by Ag New Mexico and other area businesses. Door prizes will be given during the seminar. Workshops are at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Participants can choose one of two workshops to attend during each time frame. In addition to the workshops, an Agriculture Trade Show will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of the Convention Center. Businesses from the area will bring samples of their products to show. On the agriculture side of the program, Dr. Clay Mathis and Dr. Manny Encinias, both Extension Livestock Specialists with NMSU will give an update on the National and New Mexico Animal I.D. program. Forage and row crop options will be presented by a panel of Mark Marsalis, Denise McWilliams and Leonard Lauriault Extension Agronomists with NMSU. The home economics program begins with a presentation on changes in banking in the future by Dr. Connie Kratzer, Family Consumer Specialist with NMSU Cooperative Extension Service. There are new banking products that are designed to save time and money, learn how they work. “Understanding Complementary and Alternative Medicine” will be presented by Dr. Bruce Jacobs, Health Specialist with the NMSU Cooperative Extension Service. His presentation will give an overview on complementary medicine: what it is and means; different approaches like, acupuncture, biofeedback, relaxation techniques, herbs; and what is bona fide. During lunch, Mr. Jack Chatfield, Project Coordinator for the Canadian River Watershed Restoration Project, will give an update on the project.
