The ostrich egg: a canvas of many options. The Great Eggspectations contest invites community businesses, groups and individuals to decorate an ostrich egg by March 1, to be sold in a March 18 auction. Eggs are free and will be delivered to those int
What the heck can you do with an ostrich egg? Decorate it, of course.
Great Eggspectations is open to local businesses, organizations, groups, offices and individuals. A release from
Eastern New Mexico Art Space said all are invited to participate in this ostrich egg decorating contest, which they hope will become an annual event.
The decorated eggs will be auctioned off on March 18 at the soon-to-be-opened art space at 2002 S. First St. with proceeds going to the art space. If the space is not ready in time, the event will be held at Tucumcari’s Convention Center.
Eastern New Mexico Art Space Executive Director Ruth Nelson said one doesn’t “egg-sactly” need to be an artist to be a part of it.
“The challenge is for the group,” she said, “who may not think of themselves as artists, to produce a work of egg art to be auctioned for the fund-raiser.
“You can decorate it any way you like,” she said. “You can take it and break it with a hammer if you want,” Nelson said, “as long as you use the egg.”
This will be the first event scheduled for the art space, Nelson said, and she encouraged everyone to jazz themselves up for the 6 p.m. event.
“Wear diamonds and blue jeans,” Nelson laughed. “Dress up if you want. This is going to be fun.”
In addition to wine, cheese and a variety of hors d’oeuvres, Nelson said a string quartet with an ethnic twang will be on hand for background music.
She also said there will be no minimum or maximum bids and she encourages local businesses to challenge each other.
“It’s a ‘my egg will sell more than your egg’ challenge,” Nelson said. “We want to get some friendly competition going, some community spirit.”
Nelson said she has already been delivering the eggs to interested parties; the deadline for entries is March 1.
Nelson also said they are taking some eggs to recruit artists from Santa Fe and Taos.
“Every year Taos has a gourd decorating contest,” Nelson said, “and we racked our brains to figure out what we have that is local.”
Floeck’s ostrich farm came to mind, she said, from which they purchased 100 eggs to get the egg rolling, so to speak.
Nelson said she has been working closely with David Buchen of Mesalands Community College’s Small Business Development Center and area artist Sharon Quarles on both the egg contest and the art space.
Anyone interested in participating in Great Eggspectations can call Quarles at 461-7891 or Nelson at 576-3785.
