Rattlers rake homecoming win against Estancia

The Tucumcari Rattlers culminated their week of basketball with a homecoming win against the Estancia Bears on Friday. Contributing to the final score of 52-41, Nathan McDonald led the Rattlers with 15 points. To kick off the game, the Rattlers started fast scoring 14 unanswered points. Defensively, the Rattlers held the Bears scoreless until 1:53 remaining in the first period. In the second period the Rattlers continued to dominate, outscoring the Bears 14-6 and taking a 32-14 lead into the intermission. Clawing back in the third period the Bears were able to outscore the Rattlers 17-9. The final period had each team exchanging basket after basket until the Rattlers ended the homecoming festivities with a win. Drew White scored 12 points and was the second leading scorer for the Rattlers. Estancia was led by David Ortiz with 10 points, followed by his brother Daniel Ortiz with 7 points. The homecoming victory comes in the wake of Tuesday’s defeat by Santa Rosa in the “Lion Den,” with a final score of 70-45. In varsity action the Rattlers held a 16-13 lead at the end of the first period. The second period stayed close as the Lions hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to go down 24-26 at intermission. The second half had the Rattlers come out cold and the Lions coming out hotter than a firecracker on the fourth of July, outscoring the Rattlers 46-19 in the final two periods. Jeremy Lopez had 12 points and Nathan McDonald added 11 points for the Rattlers in the defeat. The Lions’ Joey Urban led all scorers with 23 points and Daniel Zamora hit for 17 points, handing the Rattlers their second district loss of the season. In the junior varsity game the Rattlers were defeated 66-51. The Rattlers were down 36-31 at intermission but were outscored 19-6 in the third period. There inability to recover led to defeat by the Lions. D.J. Martinez led the Rattlers with 12 points followed by Gabriel Anaya with 10 points. Brian Munis led the Lion attack with 15 points and Luke Sena added 14 points. Next up for the Rattler boys are the Red Devils in Springer today and the Demons in Dexter on Tuesday for non-district games.
