Rattlers fall short of state berth

QCS Staff The Tucumcari Rattlers picked a bad day to have a sub-par performance on their home golf course. Needing a first-place finish to earn a state tournament berth, the Rattlers finished in third place during Monday’s district golf meet at the Tucumcari Municipal Golf Course. Teams can qualify for the state tournament in two ways — by hitting a qualifying score at three different events throughout the season or by winning district. The Rattlers had little shot to do either, with two tournaments canceled by weather earlier in the year and state-title-contender St. Michael’s coming Monday. The Horsemen had two of the top three golfers on the day and posted a 314 team score, eight shots better than second-place Las Vegas Robertson. Raton’s Ricco Tapia shot a 74 in individual play to earn medalist honors. The host Rattlers shot a team score of 349. Senior Clay Beevers led the Rattlers with a score of 80, and Qasim Badshah shot an 87. Other golfers for the Rattlers included Stephen Smith (90), Justin Alvarez (92) and Anas Badshah (99). St. Michael’s swept the field, as the Lady Horsemen had three of the top five shooters and posted a team score of 350. Ursula Erickson shot an 80 to take medalist honors for girls and lead Robertson to a second-place team score of 388.
