City commissioners approved a liquor license transfer and a grant agreement for city zoning ordinances during a short meeting Thursday night at Tucumcari City Hall. The Commission approved a transfer of liquor license No. 0352, from Jerry’s Liquor Store to DFS Properties. The transfer was made due to an ownership change in the store located at 508 E. Tucumcari Boulevard. Commissioners also approved an agreement on a Community Block Development Grant with the state Department of Finance and Administration. City Manager Richard Primrose said the $30,000 grant will be used for general zoning purposes. “We’re going to redo our zoning and subdivision with this grant,” Primrose said. “It’s not that we have any problems. We just need to update our ordinances.” Primrose expected the money would be available for the city in about a month, pending approval from the state DFA. In other business: • An agreement was reached for use of an annual litter control and beautification grant. The grant money is generally used to pay various youth groups, who pick up trash in needed areas to help raise funds for various events. “It also gives us some money for equipment,” Primrose said, “for weed-eaters and lawnmowers and items like that.” • Commissioners offered praise for the work of emergency personnel in the rescue and recovery efforts Thursday night and Friday morning at the irrigation canal that runs underground adjacent to Charles Avenue. Two boys, 15-year-old Gabriel Jones and 12-year-old Agustin Montiel, were sucked into the canal at its opening. Jones was rescued at another canal opening. Montiel died in the canal and was found Friday evening.
