Superintendent William Reents, who has been on paid administrative since June 6, was given a termination letter on Wednesday by Tucumcari Schools Board of Education. Reents declined to elaborate on his situation, saying only that, "I found it interesting." Reents said he has hired an attorney, Edward Hollington of Albuquerque. In early June, the five-member board agreed unanimously, after meeting in a closed executive session for 90 minutes to place Reents on administrative leave. Reents had been with Tucumcari schools since July 2002, when he replaced the retiring Frank Jimenez. He has overseen the school system during its change to a four-day school week over the 2005-06 academic year. Aaron McKinney, the assistant superintendent, was named acting superintendent by the board on June 6. As acting superintendent, McKinney is being paid a monthly based on an annual salary of $90,000. As assistant superintendent he would have earned an annual salary of $78,000 beginning in July. Reents, while on leave, has been receiving his pay based øn his annual salary of $101,000. Tucumcari school board Chairman Rex Kirksey would not elaborate on the letter to Reents. He said that the board had agreed on July 17 to terminate Reents and that Reents could request a hearing before the board regarding their decision to terminate employment. Reents said he has requested a hearing. Kirksey said the board is not searching for a new superintendent and McKinney continues to serve as acting superintendent.
