Tucumcari’s Odeon Theater, built in 1936, is one of six theaters that were placed on Friday on the State Register of Cultural Properties, said John W. Murphey, state and national register coordinator with the state’s Historic Preservation Division. Murphey said the Odeon was recognized for its Art Deco details and for the dedication of its owner, Ramon Martinez, to keep the theater an on-going operation by the new Mexico Cultural Properties Review Committee in Santa Fe. The designation also places the Odeon on the federal register of historic places, provides financial incentives and makes it eligible for state and or federal income tax credits for certain work done on the theater. The other theaters placed on the Cultural Register are El Raton in Raton, the Luna in Clayton, the Lyceum and the State in Clovis and the Lea Theater in Lovington.
