The Tucumcari Senior Olympics has a new director, Corene Medcalf, who is looking for senior athletes to start preparing for the senior games next year. “A healthy lifestyle for seniors in Quay County is what we are trying to help promote with the Olympics and a workout program,” said Medcalf, who is from Tucumcari and began her job two weeks ago. Headquartered at the Tucumcari Senior Citizens Center, Medcalf said, "The new workout program will be available to all seniors who want to participate – not just the competitors.” Medcalf, who describes herself as a walker, will be coordinating a workout program and helping to schedule events for seniors. A member of AmeriCorps/Vista program, Medcalf receives a stipend for her work at the center. The local games will be held in May 2007 and those games will help to decide who will participate in the state games in August 2007 in Las Cruces. Participants in the Senior Olympics are age 50 and above. The events include race walkers, air gun, billiards, basketball, soccer ball kick, softball throw, shuffle board, dancing, swimming and talent show. The senior center is also seeking volunteers to help with the duties involved with the Olympics, Medcalf said. These include driving the transport van to the senior activities and offering support and encouragement to the seniors taking part in the events. For more information about exercise schedules, to sign up for Senior Olympics or to volunteer, call Corene Medcalf or Suzann Mullinex at the Tucumcari Senior Citizens Center at 461-2307.
