Tucumcari has been overwhelmed on Saturday and New Year's Eve with truckers and motorists who have not been able to get consistent access to Interstate 40 because of weather conditions and accidents.
Tucumcari police officers, Patty Lopez and Detective Jack Henrickson, rushed to the U.S. Highway 54 (Mountain Road) and East Tucumcari Boulevard to direct traffic early Sunday afternoon when traffic congestion became a safety hazard.
Vehicles and semi-trucks have been lined up for several hours, beginning at noon, in both lanes of West Tucumcari Boulevard from South Fourth to the town's most western access to Interstate 40.
Safety officials are directing motorists from West Tucumari Boulevard to city and school parking lots to accommodate all the traffic until I-40 is reopened.
