With mostly uncontested races in Tuesday’s school board elections in Quay County, the school board race for position 2 in the Village of Logan was the one to watch. Tommy J. Bruhn won the race against Kent Terry by one vote, 119 to 118, for Position 2, according to the unofficial vote count by the Quay County Clerk’s Office. Others on the ballot in Logan ran uncontested. San Jon had two contested races. Leslie Dale Bone who defeated Franklin R. Rusk 71-38 and Roger Bowe defeated Tommy Evans 71-35, according to the unofficial vote. A highlight for Tucumcari Schools Superintendent Aaron McKinney was the overwhelming voter approval for the proposed 2 mil tax for public school capital improvements and the general obligation bonds. “I’m really pleased,” said McKinney, who waited at the courthouse with school board member Doug Powers for the results. Tucumcari voters gave their approval 306 to 56 in favor of the capital tax and 304 to 63 for the general obligation bond, according to the unofficial vote. The bonds would generate $3,075,000 and the tax would generate about $250,000 annually for the next three years, McKinney said. The funds will be used for improvements and maintenance at the schools, with the initial focus on the high school, he said. “The high school hasn’t had much work done on it for years and it’s the oldest building we have,” McKinney said. Tucumcari High School – built in 1961 – needs to be renovated, its cafeteria rebuilt and a new heating and cooling system installed, McKinney said. McKinney credited the facilities steering committee for funding and distributing flyers and signs, among other things, to tell the school’s story to the public. “They worked hard to make it happen,” said Powers. They held fundraisers, paid for ads and went to speak at civic groups, Powers said. Races for school board slots in Tucumcari were uncontested. Carlos Romero was elected to represent District 1, Joe R. Barnett to District 4 and Albert J. Mitchell, Jr. to District 5, according to the unofficial vote count. Votes will be canvassed, verified by the County Clerk Ellen White and Quay Count Commissioners at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
