Rey tapped as interim city manager

Clara Rey, administrative assistant to Tucumcari city manager Richard Primrose, was named interim city manager by the City Commission Thursday night. Rey will take over as manager on March 1 when Primrose moves to the Quay County Courthouse several blocks away to become the county manager. She has worked in city government for the past 25 years and worked for the Tucumcari Public Library for 20 years. Rey said she plans to retire in August. The city has been seeking applicants for the city manager’s position and Monday is the last day to apply, Mayor Mary Mayfield said. As of Thursday, Mayfield said she had received six applications. None of them were from the four applicants who had previously applied for the job. This is the city’s second advertisement for applicants for the city manager position. Previous applicants were: • Doug Powers, director of the city’s Community Development Department. • Marty Garcia, the city’s finance department director. • Lawrence Ham, chief of the Tucumcari Police Department. • Rex Kirksey, superintendent of the New Mexico State University Agricultural Science Center in Clovis and Tucumcari. At the commissioner’s Feb. 8 meeting, Tucumcari businesswoman Yvonne Braziel queried commissioners about the progress of the city manager search. Since the city does not have a human resources department, she suggested city officials review the Dictionary of Occupational Titles which includes the qualifications and job description of a city manager. “Now, is the opportune time to be selective in the choice or choices they make,” Braziel said. “Everyone needs to call their commissioner and voice the importance in selecting an experienced, forward thinking individual with documented leadership skills. This is an opportunity Tucumcari has not had in a very long time.” City commissioners are expected to meet on March 3 to review the applications.
