Rattlers Matt Garcia watches the pitch fall short during Mondays 14-4 win against the San Jon Coyotes.
The Tucumcari Rattlers beat the San Jon Coyotes 14-4 Monday night at Tucumcari. The game ended after the fifth inning as the umpires called the game over with the 10-run rule.
“We managed to hit the ball consistently through the line up and played good defense,” said Rattlers Coach Tony Alarcon. “We used three pitchers tonight to get them some playing time and prepare them for the Santa Rosa Tournament which starts Thursday.”
The game was called at the bottom of the fifth when Tucumcari's Andre DeBord crossed home, giving the Rattlers a 10-point lead and the win.
It was a night of pitchers for both teams as each would air out the arms of a trio of pitchers.
While the Rattlers rotated pitchers C.J. Newman, Matt Smith and D.J. Martinez to give each of them some time on the mound, the Coyotes were in a much different situation.
Coyotes starting pitcher Danny Shetter got off to a rocky start by beaning Rattlers pitcher Martinez.
Shetter had five walks, including two on Martinez, who he hit twice with wild pitches. At the top of the fifth, coach Waymond Ragland pulled Shetter from the mound and put in center fielder Richard Vasquez. Vasquez’s time on the mound was brief. After walking his first two at bats, Ragland called for time and subbed catcher Will McEntire to pitch for the remainder of the game.
“Danny’s (Shetter) back was hurt so I pulled him out,” said Ragland. “Right now, the problem is getting enough people to show up for our team to compete. We will just have to keep going and live through it.”
