Tucumcari High School’s class of 2007 graduated Friday night.
Sixty-three seniors sat in anticipation as the ceremony began with the traditional Pomp and Circumstance in the Rattlers Snake Pit.
“I have been waiting for this my whole life,” said Janice Apodaca. “I am first in line to get my diploma but I feel that is a disadvantage. I have to wait for every one else to get theirs. And If I mess up every one will see me.”
The seniors listened to the speeches about the future that lay ahead from their Salutatorian Phillip Burns and Valedictorian Olivia Mitchel.
The Tucumcari High School Jazz band along with seniors Rusty Brake, Dustin Russell and Tiffany Davis played Basin Street Blues and Born to Be Wild as a tribute to their classmates.
Class president Samantha Montano, recalled her memories from their first years in grade school through junior high and into high school and the experiences along the way.
A slide show of the senior class presented by their parents drew tears from graduates and their families.
“It feels great graduating but sad at the same time,” said Theresa Chacon. “I started to cry halfway through the slide show .”
“It is hard to believe that it is all over,” said Gretchen Chacon, Theresa’s mother. “It has been a lot of fun watching her grow up through the years.”
Finally, the graduates were called to the stage for their diplomas.
Afterwards, the class vice president, Connie Lau, and class secretary, Brandon Sours, initiated the tassel ceremony.
Then, high school principal Susan Montoya pronounced that the 2007 class had graduated.
“It was overwhelming to see her graduate,” said Lisa McCartney, Tiffany Davis’ mom. “Seeing her get her diploma was just awesome.”
“This is a door in my life and now it is my turn to decide what I want to do,” said Tiffany Davis. “As I was sitting there, I kept wondering what was next and would I see my classmates again.”
