Fire engulfed the historic Sands Dorsey building at Second and Main in Tucumcari about 5 p.m. Friday.
Firefighters from the Tucumcari Fire Department along with volunteer firefighters from neighboring districts worked feverishly into the evening hours to keep the blaze from spreading to other buildings.
At 7 p.m. bursts of flame could still be seen and firefighters were still on scene.
The owner of the building said work was being done on the roof when the fire broke out.
Sharon and Doug Quarles, owners of the Gallery 111, located in the building, with the help of friends were able to empty their gallery of artwork. The artists and muralists have their gallery on the first floor of the building.
