Committee chairs who put together the June 8 event are Chris Grady, Anthony Benavidez, Christy Benavidez, Quay County coordinator, Jacob Calbert, Abby Maestas, Marcy Maestas, Sarah Maestas, Rita Martinez and Joe Martinez.
When they took their first lap there were a few that fell behind during the June 8 Relay for Life to raise money to fight cancer. But when they came around the last corner, the ones in the lead stopped and waited for them to catch up so they could cross the finish line together, said Christy Benavidez, Quay County coordinator of the event. “ We had a few who only made it once around and some who stayed on the track for an hour,” Benavidez. And everyone’s efforts paid off. “We raised our goal of $10,000 and we still have money coming in,” she said. And not one to let up on a cause, Benavidez said, “ We can accept money for this event until September. “We had seven teams and our goal was to double last year which we did.” Without the help of the committee chairs, Benavidez said it wouldn’t have been possible. “And, I am so grateful to all of them for their hard work and dedication to this event. We hope next year will be even better. If you would like to contribute to the event, checks or cash should have the notation: Quay Relay, and donations may be taken to Christy at Tucumcari Federal Savings and Loan, 301 S. First St.
