Even before Anthony Macias went to Tucumcari High School he was biking, swimming, and running. He's an athletic type, one who takes being fit very seriously. The THS graduate, after attending the University of New Mexico, joined the Air Force at 21. And, today, he's SSgt. Anthony Macias and stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana where he serves in the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron. His job in the Air Force is maintaining fuel storage and dispensing facilities. He says, "Occasionally we have to do fuel tank inspections that require us to enter the (empty) tanks with a supplied air system. Kind of like scuba equipment but with a hose leading to outside." But he hasn't given up on athletics. Macias is an ironman athlete who recently ran in the St. Croix Half Ironman. The half-ironman is a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1- mile run. It’s the second hardest race, with a full ironman being the hardest. “I will be moving (military) to Korea in a few months and while there I plan on doing another 70.3 as well as a few triathlons on the Korean Peninsula,” said Macias.
