Buchen's MainStreet director, former student wounded in Iraq

MainStreet taps director... The Tucumcari Main Street Corp. announced Tuesday it has selected David Buchen for the position of director of Tucumcari MainStreet, according to a press release. His new position with MainStreet will start in August. Buchen had previously led the Small Business Development Office at Mesalands Community College. Buchen was recently named the Star for the Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) in the state of New Mexico. This award is given each year to an employee of the SBDC for their work with clientele and business communities, the release said. "We believe that David has the experience, talent and commitment to lead our MainStreet Program to success. He is already familiar with the Program, its goals and its hurdles. We have the utmost confidence in his ability to overcome these hurdles and accomplish our goals" said Don Schutte, president of the MainStreet program, in the release. Buchen has over 18 years of experience in working with numerous small business communities. He has served as Director of the Small Business Development Center at Mesalands Community College here in Tucumcari and before that as Director of the Entrepreneur Development Center in Beloit, Wisc.. He has worked as an economic development specialist for the Small Business Administration Regional Office in Chicago and directed a national home-based business project for the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. "I hope to be able to help individuals within the Tucumcari MainStreet service area with their small business needs and to assist this important part of our community to regain its vital position within our community." said Buchen, in the release. Injured on Iraq patrol ... A former Tucumcari High School student was recently injured in Iraq. Manuel Martiz, 33, was injured by a grenade during his last patrol before his scheduled return to the United States, said the Marine’s mother, Vielka Martiz of Tucumcari. Martiz’s hand was injured in the blast and he underwent surgery on Monday to repair the damage, she said. Martiz attended Tucumcari Schools from 1984-1990 before moving to Amarillo and joining the Marine ROTC program at Caprock High School. Martiz moved his senior year attended and graduated from Mesa High School in Albuquerque, she said. After graduation Martiz enlisted in the Navy and served from 1994-1998. He enrolled in 1999 in the aerospace engineers course at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. Martiz was still attending classes at Embry Riddle when he re-enlisted with the U.S. Marines in December of 2005, said Vielka Martiz.
