Clovis Christian takes all three from San Jon

The San Jon Lady Coyotes lost their first district game Thursday to Clovis Christian Lady Eagles. The Lady Coyotes lost in three sets at San Jon, 25-23, 25-14 and 22-25. The first and third sets were the best in the matchup. Most of the points were hard fought and only a few came from errors from either side. "We will work more on our coverage," said Lady Coyotes coach Tonya Davis. "We will practice on filling the gaps that we had in coverage and work on getting our hitting back in synch." In the first set, the Lady Coyotes (1-5, 0-1) took a four-point lead, 20-16, their largest of the night, when Lady Eagles Jennifer Schaap tried to add another kill to her stats. Coyotes senior Brittany Slutz saved the play with a diving dig and senior Ysidra Tellez dinked it over, in mid-air backwards, for the point."We need to work on our coverage and blocking," said Tellez. "If we adjust to picking up the kills, then we'll do better against Logan on Saturday." Schaap slowed the Lady Coyotes momentum with back-to-back kills on the following plays, she had seven kills in the first set and 13 for the night. In the third set, the Lady Eagles kept the ball in play even when it would have been a free point. Schaap, a 6-foot tall middle hitter, had four kills in the final set and would have had more. But the Lady Coyotes answered with 5-foot, 6-inch Tellez who came through with two difficult blocks. The Lady Eagles (9-2, 2-0) were a bit un-tested going into San Jon, they had lost a player the day before the game. "Our normal setter transferred to another school yesterday and the girls had no chance to practice playing without her before this game," said lady Eagles coach Lora Hubby. "The girls adjusted well and played exceptional tonight. I teach the girls to play aggressive and encourage them not pass up the free ball." The Lady Coyotes next game is today at 4:30 p.m. against the Logan Lady Longhorns at Logan.
